We all make them every year. We vow to eat right, work out more, knock out those big projects around the house, and maybe travel more. Making these goals is a great way to kick off the new year, but we believe that setting fun goals is just as important. We came up with the Top 5 things to do in Atlanta’s DeKalb in 2015. You have a whole year, so start planning now!
Get some fresh air! Climb Stone Mountain or Arabia Mountain (Or both!)
It’s no surprise that the number one New Years Resolution is to get in shape. To workout more to lose the few pounds we inevitably put on due to the Thanksgiving turkey and Holiday cookies. Regardless to if you are looking to get into shape, or just wanting to spend some time outdoors (even in this very mild winter), DeKalb has two mountains where you can spend the entire day hiking and picnicking.
Stone Mountain Park has over 3,200 acres of outdoor activities for the whole family. Climb the mountain, hike the trails, or take the Summit SkyRide to the top of the mountain and experience beautiful views of Atlanta and the Appalachian Mountains.
Once you have checked off Stone Mountain, head down to South DeKalb to experience the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area. Here you will find some of the best hiking and bike trails in the state, meet a society of Trappist monks, and http://arabiaalliance.org/.
Take a tour of a local brewery
Craft beer is no longer just a trend; it’s a nationwide industry that has a strong loyal following. The state of Georgia has dozens of craft breweries ranging from small, local beers to nationally recognized brands. DeKalb County is home to Three Taverns Craft Brewery, Wild Heaven Craft Brewery, and BlueTarp Brewing Co. All three of these breweries are gaining national recognition and are beginning to stack up the awards. Tours of these breweries are a fun way to try new brews while learning a bit about the love and labor that goes into every bottle.
Find an elusive pop-up by a local chef
The Metro Atlanta area is home to several James Beard winners, as well as many up-and-coming chefs that are pushing the envelope of casual and fine dining. Many of these chefs live right here in DeKalb County. Because of this, it’s no surprise that DeKalb has become one of the Southeast’s Next Big Food Scenes.
Many of these up-and-coming chefs are creating pop-up restaurants around DeKalb and Atlanta. On certain days of the week, chefs will set up shop in different restaurants and serve some of the best food the city has to offer. One of the most popular current pop-ups isEat Me, Speak Me in Candler Park. These pop-ups come and go, so keep an eye out!
Pay you respect at the Elvis Shrine at the Star Community Bar
Atlanta’s DeKalb is home to some of the most famous, as well as most unique, nightlife in Metro Atlanta. One of the more unique nightspots in the county is the Star Community Bar. The Star Bar is host to many local and touring bands from a wide range of genres. From metal to folk, you are guaranteed to find a band that fits your style.
While you are there, make sure you pay your respects to The King. Star Bar has their very own shrine dedicated to Elvis Presley! Kneel at the alter, toss a coin, and make a wish to kick off 2015.
Purchase some local art at a DeKalb festival
There are art galleries all around DeKalb County filled with one-of-a-kind pieces by local artists. Throughout the year, local festivals take place in different cities and communities highlighting these artists. You will be able to find everything from folk art to fine art at DeKalb festivals.
