  2. Atlanta Has More Than 55 Streets with the Name “Peachtree”: Peaches and peach trees have long been an important part of Georgia’s culture. As the capital of the aptly named “Peach State,” Atlanta is a progressive city with an unwavering connection to its southern roots, which is clear given its appropriately named streets and monuments.
  3. Atlanta Was Once Completely Burned to the Ground: In 1864, Union General William Sherman ordered the city of Atlanta set ablaze during the Civil war. Having been safely rebuilt, Atlanta adopted the symbol of the mythical Phoenix as a representation of its strength and rebirth.
  4. Atlanta’s State Capitol Building Is Layered With Pure Gold: The gold that coats the dome atop the state capitol building in Atlanta was mined from the nearby city of Dahlonega, recognized as the first city to be a part of the American Gold Rush.
  5. Atlanta Has the Longest Performing Ballet Company in America: The Atlanta Ballet was founded in 1929 and has been performing ever since. The Fox Theatre hosts the company’s regular season, as well as many other attractions.
